In the early 1900's
the Atlantic class steam locomotives were very popular with many European
Railroads and used for express traffic. The 108 class was designed by
the famous Austrian locomotive designer Karl Gölsdorf and first built
in 1901, it was one of his most extra ordinary designs. The Austrian
108 was a highlight among steam locomotives. With it's technical design
and unique appearance it was unmatched and considered to be the best
proportional and balanced steam locomotive ever built. In 1906 it was
on exhibit in Milan Italy and it won the prestigious "Grand Prix" award
for design. The 108 were four-cylinder express locomotives with extremely
large driving wheels reaching speeds up to 143 kilometers. These exquisite
locomotives ran on many famous routes from Vienna to Berlin and as far
South as Verona Italy, it also ran from Vienna to Prague, Vienna to
St. Petersburg Russia and many other famous routes. Because of it's
beauty and performance it also was use to pull the famous "Orient Express".
