Prototype Information
The unique Class 18 201 was constructed in 1961 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn using components from several German express steam locomotives. Designed as a high-speed test locomotive, it became famous for reaching speeds in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph), making it one of the fastest operational steam locomotives ever built. In later years, an auxiliary tender was added to increase operating range on excursion trains, giving the locomotive its distinctive appearance reproduced by this model.
