The Ferrobuses of the 591 series shaped Spanish local and regional transport for many years and, due to the limited electrification of the lines, were in use nationwide. With 300 hp and a top speed of 90 km/h, they represented an important modernization step for the RENFE fleet in the 1960s and often replaced very old vehicles. Although the series was retired in 1988, the newly founded U.N. de Regionales later refurbished, repainted, and put back into service two two-car units of the sub-series 500.
