In 1968, the RhB ordered the two-stroke locomotive Gem 4/4 801-802 as a wire-independent reserve and for snow removal trains. On the Bernina line they can be electrically operated under contact wire or - on the main network - driven by two diesel engines. Many of the components could be taken from the 1964-1965 built railcar ABe 4/4 41-49. They contributed to the procurement of the ABe 4/4 51-53 1988 and 54-56 in 1990, the brunt of the operation on Bernina.
