The main difference between the express train locomotive of the 211 series and the freight train variant E 42 are the modified graded gears.
In contrast to the 100 km/h which the freight train E42 can reach, the express train locomotive of the 211 series can reach 120 km/h thanks to a modified graded gear system. Between 1970 and 1976, a total of 54 machines of the variation with six individual ventilators and smooth frames were made and classified under 211 043 and 211 096.
