For light line and shunting service, the Württemberg State Railway purchased a large number of small tender locomotives of the T 3 class from 1891 onwards. A total of 110 vehicles were delivered from the Krauss locomotive works and the locomotive works in Heilbronn and Esslingen. The small six-coupled locomotives were characterised by easy operation and low maintenance. The locomotives were so successful that some were still providing reliable daily service on the state railways right up to the 1950s.
