Information about the model
The DR (East German Railways) in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) also faced shortages in all areas. Rapid procurement and repairs, as seen with the DB (West German Railways), were impossible. To at least simplify maintenance, a consolidation of carriage types was undertaken, attempting to home each carriage type to only a few railway divisions and stations. Naturally, this measure was only partially successful and was never fully implemented in practice. Many details on the carriages were also simplified to facilitate maintenance. The clerestory windows were completely eliminated and sealed. Half of the doors on each side of the carriage were removed, which, while hindering passenger boarding and alighting, saved material. Accordingly, the layout featured a through-passage and a new interior. From 1963 onward, new carriages were built, similar to the DB's approach, by combining a refurbished underframe with a new body. The DR called these "Rekowagen" (reconstruction carriages) – corresponding to the already existing "Rekoloks" (reconstruction locomotives). The last compartment carriages remained in service until 1970, but they were not assigned computer-based numbering.
