As they were intended for dirty work, maintenance vehicles were often converted from older cars. In contrast to this, the Bayerische Staatsbahn bought 190 new X-cars of Class 390 from 1889 onwards. These cars were primarily used for transporting track materials. As very early forerunners of combined freight, however, the furniture cars of a freight forwarder also occasionally had to be transported.
Of course, special cars were not yet available for this and therefore flat cars with low side walls were the preferred choice.
