Double-decker trains have successfully formed the backbone of regional transport for many years. They are the ideal solution, especially on routes with short platform lengths and high passenger volumes. The proven single-car concept of the TWINDEXX Vario double-decker fleet is now being complemented by an electric multiple unit. Bombardier Transportation will deliver 16 Bombardier TWINDEXX Vario multiple units equipped for regional trains to Deutsche Bahn AG. The new four-car multiple units of the Do 2010 generation each consist of two power cars and two intermediate cars. With the newly developed powered TWINDEXX Vario power car, the trains can now also be operated as pure double-decker multiple units. This allows for operation as an electric multiple unit in addition to the classic push-pull operation with an electric or diesel locomotive. Depending on the intended use and required capacity, this power car can be combined with intermediate cars and a driving trailer. The central buffer coupler enables operation in double traction and thus the implementation of a wing concept. The trains, featuring combined high-level and low-level entry, are equipped with comfortable amenities including generous legroom and ample storage space. The double-decker single carriages also allow for the lengthening and shortening of the train consist, enabling adaptation to fluctuating demand or future developments. This makes them suitable for a wide range of operational applications in regional and long-distance transport.
