The Electrotrén Basculante 443, better known as the "Platanito", was Spain's first exposure to high speed. Its Italian prototype, designed to increase speed on curves, used what is known as Active Tilting, a breakthrough technology that consisted in tilting the car bodies on curves to increase the speed of trains passing through them, without sacrificing passenger comfort to affect. Amazed by the results of the Italian prototype, the RENFE line decided in the late 1970s to request a prototype adapted to the Spanish network, which was delivered in 1976. The "Platanito" reached a speed of 200 km/h in the first year of its testing and traveled a large part of our country, even being used commercially on several lines of the national network. For years he held the speed record in Spain at 206.8 km/h. Unfortunately, during these tests he suffered a breakdown from which he never recovered. The lack of spare parts and the associated costs, since it was a one-off, led to its decommissioning. Since then she has remained in the Fuencarral depot with an uncertain fate, until a scrapping order was signed. Luckily, he was saved and since 1994 he has been standing on one of the tracks of the Castejón de Ebro train station, under the selfless care of a group of volunteers who continue to take care of him. Such a popular and at the same time unique vehicle deserves to be replicated and raced on enthusiasts' models. This is our way of paying tribute to this mythical automobile. And the fact is that the "Platanito" is above all and just like us, an electric door.
