Cog railways exude a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountain scenery and bold routes, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The movement of the train is effected by the engagement of a gear wheel in a rack located in the middle of the track, as the usual friction between the wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In rack railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack sections, depending on the gradient conditions, the tractive force is exerted by one and the same machine. There are particularly many private cog railways in the Alps, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
