The twin-cylinder engines of the class 01 are considered the first express train locomotives to be produced in accordance with the standard construction programme. The first construction lots were equipped with leading wheels of 800 mm diameter and approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102, 1,000 mm leading wheels were used and the brakes reinforced, thus the allowed maximum speed could be increased to 130 km/h. The era of the class 01 locomotives began with the summer timetable of 1934. The performance demanded of them during the following years was a major challenge for both the engines and the personnel. After the Second World War, these performances were not achieved again until electric locomotives and large-scale diesel locomotives were introduced. The locomotive 01 161 brought Henschel in 1935 to the Hannover depot, which served the East-West axis Hamm-Magdeburg and the North-South axis to Hamburg and Kassel from the centre.
