From 1928 to 1943, nearly all German locomotive factories supplied a total of 775 locomotives of this class to the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft. The 1,000 hp locomotives were designed for speeds of 70–80 km/h, which meant that, in addition to their primary use on "branch lines", they could also operate on main and feeder lines.
