The 212 series is considered a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development requirements. Only a more powerful engine with 993 kW was used in the machine. Entered into service from 1962 to 1965 as the BR V 100.20, in contrast to the V 100.10, which was used in branch line service, it was also intended for main and steep line service. The locomotives were considered very robust and reliable; they achieved high, trouble-free mileage. The machines were widespread in almost all of Germany.
