The V 180 series of the German Reichsbahn of the GDR was the largest diesel locomotive built in the GDR. It was initially built in a four-axle version with two 2-axle bogies, later there were also 6-axis variants. The low axle mass of 15.6 t is still considered a master engineering achievement in the six-axle version today, so that this locomotive can also be used universally on secondary tracks. It also has approval for steep stretches. The resulting possible field of application is unique in large German diesel locomotives.
