Since the beginning of the railway era, it is necessary to clear the tracks in case of snow or drifts. From simple snow removal plates to large snow plows to high-performance snow slingshots, the spectrum of railway service vehicles ranges.
At the Deutsche Bundesbahn, it became necessary from the 1960s to replace the old, still steam-powered snow slingshots. In the Alps, in the Allgäu and abroad, various small heavy cars with hatch-diesel snow sling assemblies were tested. A disadvantage of these vehicles was the use of an additional locomotive for the feed.
In order to make snow removal even more efficient, a self-propelled high-performance snow slingshot was developed. This allowed snow depths of up to 3 metres to be overcome. This would have prepared perfectly for any weather conditions. After extensive test drives, however, the series delivery to the Deutsche Bundesbahn was delayed until the early 1990s.
