From 1976 to 1995, the ÖBB purchased 217 series 1044 four-axle thyristor locomotives. The 5,120 kW locomotives with speeds of up to 160 km/h shaped the modern image of the ÖBB for many years. From 2002 onwards, all 1044s were equipped with push-pull control. This made the vehicles now known as 1144 even more versatile.
