The electric locomotives of the 1216 series (Taurus 3) are multi-system three-phase universal locomotives that are based on the technology of the Siemens EuroSprinter type family. The exterior and the high-speed bogies were adopted from the first two Taurus generations, but with some detailed changes.
From 2006 to 2008, 50 locomotives were delivered to ÖBB. They are designed for operation on routes with a mains voltage of 15kV/16.7 Hz, 25 kV/50 Hz and 3 kV/DC. The maximum power is 6,400 kW and the top speed is 230 km/h. They are used in national and international passenger and freight transport.
The locomotive must also have the respective country packages for the individual countries. This includes the special equipment for train radio, displays, voice output, train protection systems, labels and additional equipment. In addition to being used in Austria and Germany, the locomotives of variant C (1216.2) are equipped with an additional country package for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
