The class 1044 is a multi-purpose electric locomotive which can be used both for heavy express train and freight train service in the lowlands and on mountain routes. At the time they were put into service, these locomotives were the strongest four-axle electric locomotives in the world, and, until procurement of the Taurus, the pride showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways.
