As a successor to the legendary crocodiles, the SBB procured a larger series of Ae 6/6 locomotives from 1952 than universal locomotives for the Gotthard. Each locomotive carried the coat of arms of a canton, a cantonal capital or a larger Swiss city. It was therefore referred to as the “coat of arms locomotive”.
