For use on the French DC grid, the French State Railways procured a total of 237 locomotives of the BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotive from 1976. The design of the locomotives with the so-called “nez cassé” (broken nose) comes from the hand of the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for towing the trace-changeable “Talgo III RD” trains. For recognition, the buffer body was painted red.
