Prototype: The “Taurus” family of electric locomotives is one of the most successfully built locomotives, initially developed by Siemens and Adtrans. Siemen's started developing a new powerful and universal locomotive with the Austrian state railways ÖBB. Designed by Porsche, the Taurus was created with a modular design and a dynamic new look. The Austrian ÖBB railroads ordered the first batch of Siemens Taurus Eurosprinter ES64U2 locomotives exclusively for its national traffic. These locomotives were classified as the first generation, Class1016. The second generation Taurus Class 1116 was soon developed with a running capacity of 25 kV 50Hz. The incredible new modern electric “Taurus” locomotives are currently used in many European countries including Germany, Hungarian, Slovakia and Slovenia. Other European railroads use their own classification of the Taurus locomotive, for instance in Hungary the class 1116 is known as the class 1047.
