Prototype: The development of the V160 began at Krupp in spring 1956. After a pre-series of 10 machines, series production started after a few modifications in 1964. A total of 224 locomotives of this type were built at various plants. The universal diesel locomotive, which was designed for 120 km / h, was initially equipped with steam boilers for the train heating, as no suitable technology was yet available for diesel locomotives for electric train heating. From the V160 and its further development, a whole locomotive family with over 800 units was created in a few years. According to the DB series scheme introduced in 1968, these bore the series numbers 210, 215, 217, 218, and 219. The DB later created the numbers 225 and 226 by means of re-drawings. The last BR 216 was only retired in 2004. Even today, vehicles are preserved in museums.
