It is certainly one of the most beautiful narrow-gauge steam locomotives in Germany.

We are talking about the "Spreewald," a 109-year-old vintage locomotive that today steams through the charming landscape as a little gem on the First German Museum Railway at the German Railway Association (DEV) in Bruchhausen-Vilsen. Among the many impeccably maintained vintage vehicles of the DEV, the "Spreewald" can certainly tell the most exciting story.

In 1917, it saw the light of day, along with four sister locomotives, at the Jung locomotive factory in Jungenthal on the Sieg River. The first home line of these nimble 40 km/h locomotives, equipped with three driving axles and a leading axle, lay in the dark forests of East Prussia on the Pillkall Light Railway near the border with the Russian Empire. In the autumn of 1944, the light railway workers took some of their relatively new locomotives westward shortly before the Red Army advanced.

One locomotive eventually ended up with the Spreewald Railway and was given the number 99 5633 by the Reichsbahn (East German State Railway). After its home line was closed, the locomotive was allowed to leave East Germany in 1971 and found a new home with the DEV (German Railway Association). The "Spreewald" first appeared in the LGB (Long Range Model Railway) catalog in 1988. Since then, it has been one of the most popular garden railway models. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the DEV museum railway, LGB is re-releasing this classic – a fitting tribute to a narrow-gauge steam locomotive with a rich history. This model is of the DEV's Spreewald steam locomotive as it is currently in service on the museum railway from Bruchhausen-Vilsen to Asendorf.
