The 231 G locomotive boasted an impressive 2,200 horsepower (1,600 kW). In 1929, Engine 231-523 underwent a modification, transitioning from a four-cylinder to a three-cylinder configuration and was equipped with Lentz valves.
This locomotive series, known as the 231 G, was a 4-6-2 steam locomotive class operated by the Chemin de Fer de l'État, often referred to as "the État." Production of this series commenced in 1914, with deliveries spanning from 1916 to 1923. These locomotives were introduced to replace and supplement the 231 B, which had a history of derailments. They were numbered as class 231-501 to 231-783 by the État and as 231 G 501 to 231 G 783 by the SNCF.
These locomotives gained fame for their service on passenger trains, particularly on routes like the Paris-Le Havre and Paris-Le Mans-Rennes expresses. Following World War I, other companies received locomotives from the 231-500 series through government support. These were designated as 231 TP for Travaux Publics (Public Works), the former title of the Ministry of Transport.
