Model & Prototype Information
Prototype: The RENFE class 1300/313 diesel electric locomotives were built to replace steam traction on freight trains in southern Spain; particularly on lines requiring low axle weight. They were based on ALCO’s DL 535 Export Model. Fifty locomotives were constructed by ALCO and Euskalduna from 1965-1967. The first units built in the US by ALCO had “Ayuda Americana” (American Help) logos attached under the cab windows. The 1300s ran in freight as well as passenger service throughout the provinces of Andalucia, Extremadura, and LaMancha. They saw much use in ore train service on the Almeria-Linares line. The 1300’s kept their original green paint scheme throughout most of their service life although some were repainted into RENFE’s “Taxi” yellow-and-grey scheme later on. The 1300s lasted in RENFE service until the mid-1990s. Previously, in 1989, the Portuguese Railroads (CP) had acquired eighteen 1300s, and in 1995, seventeen units were sold to Argentina. Several other 1300s were sold to track maintenance companies.
