Model & Prototype Information
Prototype: The RENFE 2200 class 0-6-0 steam locomotives served the Spanish railroads for over 100 years. Forty-five of these of these engines were built for the Madrid-Zaragoza-Alicante Railroad (MZA) from 1861-1865 by two French locomotive builders. They became known as the “Bourbonnais” locomotives and the “Creusot Mercancias” locomotives. The 2200s served the MZA until 1941 when RENFE was created, and thereafter, served the RENFE network until retirement in the 1950’and 1960’s. The 2200 class was used throughout it’s lifetime for switching and local freight and local passenger trains. Originally delivered with open-air cabs; roofs and then enclosed cabs were later installed. After the 2200s entered RENFE service they received triple headlights and square buffers. Today, one 2200 is preserved in a city park in Arevalo, near Madrid.
