After intensive tests using the two Franco-Crosti series locomotives 42.90 the German Federal Railways decided to convert several locomotives of class 50 accordingly. At a Franco-Crosti boiler is a conventional locomotive boiler with a downstream second boiler. This heats the feed water with the help of passing flue gases. This second tank is therefore called Abgasvorwämer. The Italian designers and Franco Crosti already built in the 30s, the first test machines with this technology. The carbon savings from improved efficiency was about 20%. On one side of the boiler chimney sticks out of the flat mode, which gives a very distinctive appearance. The normal chimney is used during the operation no longer to dissipate the fumes, but this is only needed during heating. Despite the increased efficiency, there were relatively high operating costs because the Vorwärmerkessel were very susceptible to corrosion. A total of 31 locomotives were classified by Henschel 1954 and delivered in 1958 the German Federal Railways and as Class 50.40. The two-cylinder, 90.6-ton locomotives were in forward and reverse a top speed of 80 km / h and an induced power of 1,540 PSi. They were used in the Münsterland and the Rhineland in freight service until they were retired in 1967 and scrapped.
