The relatively soft soils and the intensive contamination made it difficult to maneuver and steer tractors over the fields. In the 30's "half crawler"-type vehicles mentioned could combine the advantages of the drive with the agility of conventional tractors. The Halbketten Bulldog of Lanz could be converted with simple means: the rear wheels were replaced by in each case a chain unit, the remaining chassis including the guided front axle remained unchanged. Despite unit construction system this modification was complex, and had to be done away from the fields. In the 1950's, when new strong diesel engines and improved rear drives became available, the manufacturing of this type of vehicle was discontinued.
