Leig- unit DB Starting in the mid 1920s was the former German Reichsbahn (DRG) to feel the competition of the truck. In order not to lose market share, had to be accelerated especially of general cargo. Therefore, the DRG developed in 1927 a new transport concept, with general cargo should be transported in its own trains and already sorted while driving. This saved time-consuming maneuvers for loading and unloading along the way. Actually, should these so-called  Light express freight trains (Short Leig) are driven by newly developed baggage motor, but for the time being were not available and were never built up on later individual issues. As a stopgap cost  first use was made of short trains hauled by a locomotive and the conversion of existing freight wagons. When two cars, a buffer was replaced on one side by a cleat and the other by a buffer without plate, so as to obtain two short coupled cars. At the close coupling end with a distance between the cars of only 54 cm large openings were cut into the end walls and bridges the gap with footboard and bellows. This created a large contiguous workspace. The first Leig- units were still out of a boxcar freight train and a van. After a short time Leig- units were formed from two wide-body cars. The speed limit could be increased through changes to the suspension to 100 km / h. The side walls of covered wagons bearing the inscriptions Quick cargo traffic in different designs, often the well-known variant was selected with increasing black text on a white background. The Leigs was coupled to mostly light freight trains with a maximum of ten axes together, sometimes even with an open car for bulky or dangerous goods. With this restriction, the length of the train was at platforms supported precisely and transshipments are accelerated accordingly. After the Second World War, the DB was at the beginning of the 1950s, faced with the task of replacing the getting on in years Leig- units and complete. In large numbers they procured as a result of the Leigs type Gllmehs 52. It was not until the 1960s that the circulation of DB trains of general cargo express service and the Leig- units were only in normal Freight trains continue to be used.
