Prototype: The Austrian class 80 steam locomotive was designed by Karl Gölsdorf in 1909, using the lastest superheater hot steam technology. The class 80s were a complete success, they were placed into freight service around Europe. The class 80s were purchased by the K.k.Sts.B Imperial Austrian Railways and Südbahn Southern Austrian Railways. Outside of Austrian the class 80s were also aquired by the FS Italian State Railways, PLM French Railways, SNCF French Railways and SEK/CEH Greek Railways. In East Europe the JZ Slowenian State Railways, CSD Czechoslovakian Railways, CFR Romanian State Railways, MAV Hungarian State Railways and PKP Polish State railways also purchased these incredible locomotives. Two hundred and thirteen were produced in a varity of versions, some with low pressure side pistons and others with two-sided pistons, they even produced several experimental versions. The Class 80s were produced by several locomotive manufactures, amoung them were StEG, Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf and Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik. The Class 80 locomotives were consider one of the best locomotives for their time, they were even more popular than the Prussian G10.
Model: Micro-Metakit's new class 80 is a highly detailed handmade work of art. The model has a tremendous amount of details, it features a functional boiler hatch, full cab interior, brake shoes, sand hoses and a replicated braking system. Model also has sprung loaded puffers. The class 80 comes equipped with a high efficiency faulhaber type brushless motor so the running performace is incredible. Model is produce in very small quantites so it is very limited!
