New for 2026: In the early 1990s, a need for modern and powerful three-phase AC locomotives for freight service became apparent, prompting DB to issue a tender for the development of such a vehicle in 1993.

The Siemens/Krauss-Maffei consortium won the bid, and by 1995, they had created the prototype 152 001-4, the second member of the well-known EuroSprinter family. Of the subsequent order for 195 locomotives, DB AG took delivery of 170. Upon entering service, all locomotives were assigned to the Nuremberg marshalling yard depot.

From here, the locomotives are used to haul freight trains throughout Germany, with a particular focus on hinterland traffic to and from the Port of Hamburg, operating from the Maschen marshalling yard. In addition to the locomotives for DB AG, Siemens also produced two locomotives designated ES64F for its in-house leasing company, Dispolok.

These locomotives were later sold to the railway company ITL and are currently in service for Captrain in their distinctive neon green livery.

Technically, the model continues the proven line of PIKO Expert models.

A powerful central motor provides the drive, and two flywheels ensure smooth running. Diagonally arranged traction tires on the two inner axles provide additional grip and enable the hauling of substantial model freight trains.

In digital operation with the PIKO SmartDecoder XP 5.1, the cab and driver's console lighting, as well as the high beams, can be digitally controlled. Thanks to PIKO TrainSound®, the sound versions of the locomotive also feature prototypical train sounds
