New for 2026: In the late 1980s, Polish State Railways (PKP) needed a new locomotive class for high-speed passenger service between Warsaw and Krakow, one that could withstand the demands of continuous operation at 160 km/h.
The EP05 series locomotives, converted from EU05s starting in 1973, were limited in number and showing their age. Therefore, Pafawag in Wroclaw designed a new locomotive type, the 104E. These locomotives fully met expectations, leading PKP to acquire 45 more by 1997. The EP09 was deployed across the entire network and almost completely replaced the EP05.
