For the 1991 summer timetable, the Deutsche Bundesbahn put the Mannheim - Stuttgart high-speed line into operation. In addition to the new ICE trains, the newly introduced InterRegio lines 26 Saarbrücken - Lindau and 27 Karlsruhe - Nuremberg also ran on this route. The cars on this line, as well as on line 28 Karlsruhe-Stuttgart, were fitted with vacuum toilets with silver-colored water filler necks, which are also clearly visible on the exterior wall of the model. Due to the frequent changes of direction in Stuttgart, Munich, and Friedrichshafen, these lines were equipped with control cars starting in 1995 to speed up operations.
The IR 461 from Trier to Innsbruck, from Lindau onwards, covered a significant portion of its route in Austria. Traction at that time was provided by the class 1044, which hauled the IR 461 over the famous Arlberg line until its discontinuation in June 2001.
