For the 1991 summer timetable, the Deutsche Bundesbahn put the Mannheim - Stuttgart high-speed line into operation. In addition to the new ICE trains, the newly introduced InterRegio lines 26 Saarbrücken - Lindau and 27 Karlsruhe - Nuremberg also ran on this line. The cars on this line and line 28 Karlsruhe - Stuttgart were fitted with vacuum toilets with the silver-coloured water filler necks that are also clearly visible on the outer wall of the model. Due to the numerous changes of direction in Stuttgart, Munich, and Friedrichshafen, these lines were equipped with control cars starting in 1995 to speed up operations.
The IR 461 from Trier to Innsbruck covered a significant portion of its route in Austria from Lindau. Traction at that time was provided by the 1044 series, which hauled the IR 461 over the famous Arlberg line until its discontinuation in June 2001.
