In 1927, the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) procured a total of 40 engines from the locomotive factory "Società Ernesto Breda" with rod drive. The 94-tonne, 13,910 mm-long machines with the axle formula 1'D1' were operated with three-phase current and had a continuous output of 2,200 kW.
On the Brenner line, the E.432 could often be seen hauling international express trains in the 1950s. The Italian State Railways used the E.432 class until 1976.
