The term is used for classes of DR steam locomotives on which considerable conversion work was carried out to increase performance and to adapt to the fuel situation in the GDR (shortage of hard coal) as well as to eliminate design faults. The class 52.80 Reko locomotives were built from 1960 onwards by the DR on the basis of the completely overhauled class 52 war locomotives. As the DR did not always have all colours in stock, some steam locomotives were given brown running gear.
