Known as "Jumbos" because of their enormous tractive power, the steam locomotives were used with great success in almost all of Germany and many other European countries. The maximum speed was 80 km/h forward and 50 km/h reverse. Some of these already very powerful locomotives experienced a further increase in power to 2.100 hp (1.546 kW) when they were converted to oil firing by the Deutsche Bundesbahn from 1955 on. The DB's oil-fired locomotives were given the class designation 043 from 1968 on.
