At the end of the Second World War, there were 386 class 86 locomotives on West German territory. Most of them could be repaired, so by 1952, the DB had more than 378 of the class in its fleet. Some 86s were later fitted with welded replacement water tanks. In addition to classic branch line trains, the locomotives were regularly used to haul fast trains and to shunt at goods stations. The last DB class 086 locomotives were taken out of service in 1974.
