THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF THE EDELWEISS PULLMAN EXPRESS
Introduced in 1928, the Edelweiss Pullman Express quickly established itself among Europe's most prestigious international trains.
Operated by the famous CIWL, the original service connected Amsterdam with Basel and, during certain periods, Lucerne, traveling through the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Switzerland.
The Edelweiss was a direct competitor to Germany's celebrated Rheingold Express, offering passengers an equally refined luxury travel experience.
Unlike conventional express trains, the Edelweiss featured luxurious Pullman coaches with comfortable seating, elegant interiors, and meals served directly to passengers at their seats. Its kitchen-equipped Pullman cars eliminated the need for a separate dining car.
Following World War II, the Edelweiss continued operating in different forms and eventually became part of the prestigious Trans Europ Express network in 1957. The service finally ended in 1979.
