In the early 1990s, the SNCF needed used diesel-electric locomotives to build new high-speed lines. 44 used 2400s were then purchased from the Dutch State Railways. The purchase contract included an overhaul by the workshop in Tilburg. By using two locomotives at each end of the trains, sufficient traction and thrust was available to travel up the gradients on the new line with the desired train weight. In the SNCF numbering system, the 2400s were assigned to the number series 60000-70000. The 62400s were soon nicknamed “Hollandaises” by French railway workers.
