The diesel locomotive series, called “Babelsbergerin” due to its origin, was built in series by the locomotive building “Karl Marx” from 1962. The B’B’-coupled new V 180 series, derived its name from the installed engine: 2 x 900 hp. For universal use even in front of passenger trains, the machines were equipped with a centrally mounted boiler. The top speed was 120 km/h, which was completely sufficient on the main routes of the GDR, only a few routes were geared towards higher speeds. Machines of the V 180 series, from 1970 series 118 were in use throughout the territory of the GDR.
