In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) had a great need for powerful freight diesel locomotives for medium-weight shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter T 466.2 variant was derived from the industrial T 448 locomotive type. It was manufactured by CKD in Prague from 1977 onwards in nine production series (each with slight differences) with 494 units and put into service with the CSD by 1986.
