The Class V 100.10 locomotives were procured in series from 1961/62 onwards, following trials of pre-production locomotives. They were used in mixed branch line operations on non-electrified lines and in light service on main lines. With a power output of 1,100 hp (810 kW), they were approved for a top speed of 110 km/h. In 1968, the locomotives were reclassified as Class 211. After the classic red livery, numerous locomotives received an ocean blue/beige paint scheme from 1974/75 onwards. Locomotives 211 008 to 063 were equipped with a push-pull train control system.
