The locomotives of the 132 series (232, 233, 234, and 241) were imported from the Soviet Union to the GDR by the Voroshilovgrad Locomotive Works starting in 1970 and put into service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (East German State Railway).
Due to the decline in freight traffic after German reunification, a large number of these diesel locomotives became surplus. The locomotives of the 132 series (since January 1, 1992, BR 232) were gradually converted to the new 234 series, using the 140 km/h bogies from the retired 130 series. From 1994 onwards, they were used in IR and IC services.
