The V 100 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, often referred to as the “V 100 Ost”, was one of the most important diesel locomotives in the middle performance range of the former GDR. It was developed from the early 1960s in order to gradually replace older steam locomotives in train transport.
From 1966 to 1985, more than 1,100 locomotives of this series were built in the VEB locomotive construction “Karl Marx” in Babelsberg. The individual series differed in specific details. For example, the first locomotives (V100 003 – 043) designed the stems and their roofs differently than in the later production locomotives. Especially in the early days, the machines received specially executed paintwork, which stood out from the otherwise rather uniform fleet of the railway fans.
