Beginning in 1977, the Deutsche Reichsbahn purchased 270 class 250 locomotives (later designated class 155) for heavy goods train services. These locomotives had an hourly output of 5.400 kW and could reach a top speed of 120 km/h. Their boxy shape and lack of streamlined curves, which were redundant at lower speeds, earned them the nicknames "Power Container" or "Brick".
