The Re 421 class was produced from the last delivery of Re 4/4 II series 11371 – 11397, built in the years 1983 - 1985, which were then retrofitted between 2002 and 2004 for service in Germany. The 26 locomotives (with the exception of the 11382, which was taken out of service due to a fire in 2002) were intended to supplement the Re 482 fleet delivered in 2002 for cross-border transport between Germany and Switzerland, and were also intended for use in German domestic transport for SBB Cargo Deutschland. Later, the locomotives were mainly rented out to foreign rail transport companies. Because leasing rates for locomotives to private companies declined as the numbers of new locomotives and leasing companies entering the market increased, the Re 421s were increasingly displaced to Switzerland. The engines had never been upgraded with air conditioning and the ETCS equipment which was becoming increasingly important in Switzerland, so they were put up for sale early on. Widmer Rail Services (WRS) was the first company to secure the two locomotives Re 421 373 + 381 in January 2018, which today continue to provide valuable services for this Swiss-based company.
