The rapid modernization of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the commissioning of the first "Taurus" locomotive series 1016 in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also purchased for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 Class 1116 locomotives had entered service. They are approved for speeds of 230 km/h and have an output of 6,400 kW. The Railjet is an important component of European long-distance transport, connecting not only important cities in Austria but also international destinations. Locomotives 1116.201-251 were adapted at Siemens in Munich for the Railjet services introduced in December 2008. 1116 238 received the necessary equipment in May 2011.
