Almost 200 of the E 44 series electric locomotives were put into service between 1932 and 1954. The locomotives stationed in the central German network after the end of the war in May 1945 had to be handed over to the USSR as part of the reparations after the cessation of electric operations. In 1952, the GDR was able to buy back the majority of the machines. A total of 46 locomotives were refurbished at Raw Dessau and put into service from 1955. Between 1961 and 1964, the DR equipped the locomotives with RBS 58 type pantographs with double rocker. This meant that they could be operated with only one pantograph attached.
